It covers the establishment and activities of societies for the useful arts and mechanics' libraries; inventions and patents; and actions of Congress involving legislation and treaties. It also includes: a history of tariffs from 1842 to 1862 with an alphabetical list of tariffs for that period by Henry Hay of the Philadelphia custom house; a list of the most important American inventions patented from 1850 to 1862; a list of American manufactures at various industrial exhibitions in the 1850s; manufacturing statistics taken from the census for 1860, which includes the number of male and female employees in different types of manufacturing; articles on remarkable manufacturing establishments in Philadelphia and New York, and shorter pieces on other cities; lists of the principal manufacturers of cotton and woolen goods by state; and manufacturers in the "western" states (Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri) and southern states.
