Imprint includes London: Sampson Low, Son & Co. Vol. 2 only. [2], 11-826 p., tissue-guarded frontispiece: portraits, tables; 24 cm. Rebacked with black cloth and spine label with gilt-tooled title "History of American Manufacturers 1608-1860" [sic]. Original cloth boards with blind-stamped decoration. Howes, B 476. Arranged chronologically, this volume traces the history of technology in the United States from the American Revolution to the Civil War. It covers the establishment and activities of societies for the useful arts and mechanics' libraries; inventions and patents; and actions of Congress involving legislation and treaties. It also includes: a history of tariffs from 1842 to 1862 with an alphabetical list of tariffs for that period by Henry Hay of the Philadelphia custom house; a list of the most important American inventions patented from 1850 to 1862; a list of American manufactures at various industrial exhibitions in the 1850s; manufacturing statistics taken from the census for 1860, which includes the number of male and female employees in different types of manufacturing; articles on remarkable manufacturing establishments in Philadelphia and New York, and shorter pieces on other cities; lists of the principal manufacturers of cotton and woolen goods by state; and manufacturers in the "western" states (Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri) and southern states. Includes an index to this volume. In Very Good Condition: rebacked with some repair of board edges; old dampstain at fore-edge of frontispiece and title page, which has slight discoloration from tissue-guard; a few pages lightly soiled; otherwise, clean and tight.
