About This Item

V.d., v.p. [ca 1929]. A group of three related items, as follows:

1. History of the Australian Convict Ship "Success." [Cleveland: Jontzen Printing Co., 1929]. Octavo; printed card wrappers; 196pp; illus. VG.
2. The Famous British Convict Ship - The Only One Left in the World.N.p., nd; published without imprint. Octavo; staple-bound pamphlet; pictorial paper wraps, 24pp; illus. VG.
3. Now In Washington, 7th Street Wharf. N.p., n.d.; published without imprint. 4pp bifolium brochure; pictorial cover. VG.

A small clutch of publications relating to the public tour of the Australian museum ship "Success" which, following a somewhat checkered history in the 1890s, toured North America continually from 1918 until the mid-1930s, offering patrons a sensationalized history of the British convict system. She was destroyed by fire in Lake Erie in 1946 . Though billed by its managers as a former British convict ship and as the "oldest ship afloat," neither was true (though she had seen brief service as a prison hulk in the 1850s).
