Portland, ME: Brown Thurston and Hoyt, Fogg & Donham, 1886. 503p., frontis portrait from photography, first edition, gilt lettered spine and image on front cover dimmed, both hinges badly cracked, otherwise a rather nice copy. Willey (1806-1896) was the editor of several Maine abolitionist newspapers (Advocate of Freedom, Liberty Standard, and Portland Inquirer) and was active in the Liberty Party in the 1840s.

Publisher's black cloth with pictorial vignette stamped in gold on front cover and in blind on back cover, gilt lettered spine, decorated endpapers. Ex-library with two very small ink stamps (on title page recto and verso), and one small label on spine, else no other markings. Boards are rubbed, spine moderately faded, the gold cover vignette (captioned "Go Free") is a little tarnished, very good. An attractive, well-preserved copy internally clean and bright, with all 19 plates in fine condition.
