One of the most important early histories of Territorial Arizona published in 1881. As in most histories of the era, it is focused on the Anglo pioneers and provides a study of the settlement in those early decades when Arizona was a territory. This copy has the full color map laid in the rear cover. It would be followed by the almost as rare Sidney DeLong's History of Arizona in 1905. Like the later issues of McClintock, Farish and Sloan they provide the most extensive view of the Territorial Period. It was not until Rufus K. Wyllys, a graduate of Herbert Eugene Bolton's roundtable that a strict history was written though even the later histories of Peplow, Dodge, Powell and Trimble are relatively weak on the importance of Native American and Hispanic culture. A very good copy bound in black leather like cloth lettered and decoratively stamped in gilt, spine gilt, in the original dust jacket with some very light wear to head, upper corner with a small, closed tear.
