About This Item

Carbondale, IL, U.S.A.: Southern Illinois University Press, 1976. Hard Back. Near Fine/Good. 306 pages in 33 chapters with 33 illustrations. With a list of sponsors of this reprint edition. Brown cloth with maroon and gold decorated spine. One lightly bumped corner otherwise an As New very tight unmarked book. A reprint of the original 1910 Edition Published by R.R. Donnelley & Sons. This new edition of Lansden's classic 1910 history brings back into print one of the finest examples of local history ever written. Foreword to this edition by Clyde C. Walton. Illustrated with Maps and many photographs. It was re- published here for the Alexander-Pulaski U.S. Bicentennial Commission, The Board of County Commissioners of Alexander County and Robert L. Lansden. Though Lansden derived from earlier, incomplete accounts of Cairo, his was the first full-scale work, and is to date the only complete early history of Cairo, stressing Cairo's significant relations with its area as well as with the country itself. Lansden is best remembered by the citizens of Cairo as the man who wrote the book that keeps its history alive. Almost every student in the Cairo schools has studied Lansden's history at one time or another and many citizens from time to time resolve local historical disputes by referring to it.
