New York: Harper and Brothers, 1847. First US Edition. Hardcover. Two volumes. xl, 527pp; xix, [i], 547pp. Contemporary full calf bindings ruled in gold on the covers, gilt decorations on the edges, spines with five raised bands, elaborately decorated in gilt, and with red and green calf labels lettered in gold, inner dentelles in blind, marbled edges and marbled endpapers. Bindings are signed by Matthews on the verso of the front free endpapers. According to BAL this is state A with the printer's imprint on the copyright page. Portrait frontispiece of Francisco Pizarro and inserted map of Peru in volume one, portrait frontispiece of Pedro de la Gasca and facsimile of Francisco Pizarro's signatures in volume two. Bookplate of the Boston Athenaeum on front pastedown endpapers. Some wear to corner tips, light toning and wear to spines. Internally extremely clean. A gorgeous set in near fine condition.
