About This Item
London: Smith, Elder, 1876. First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. xv, [1], 466; xi, [1], 469, [1]; recent half brown calf, marbled boards, spine gilt-lettered, marbled endpapers; bookplates to front pastedowns, some wear to corners, else near fine. Stephen, a well-rounded literary scholar and the first editor of the Dictionary of National Biography, was also known for his athletic abilities and his mountaineering skills and is known today for his famous progeny, Virginia Woolf. In the present volume of theological history, Stephen presents an account of the deist controversy, the "chief product of eighteenth-century theology," with a general description of the theological and philosophical atmosphere of the time.
