About This Item

Macmillan London Ltd, London, first edition, 1982. Cloth, 4to,. 192 pp, ills. From the blurb: "From its origins in the early sixteenth century to the more relaxed atmosphere of the present day, erotic literature has had a checkered and colourful history, delighting and intriguing collectors and bibliophiles almost as much as its readers. For over four centuries erotic works have been clandestinely printed, published anonymously and acquired for the secret libraries of wealthy collectors. A History of Erotic Literature is a new, fully illustrated account of clandestine erotica which makes public for the first time some of the rarest erotica in the world, including the title pages and illustrations from English, French and German classics which have been hidden away in private collections and the Private Case of the British Library until the publication of this book. From Aretino's Sonnetti lussurioso (1527) and Michel Millot's L'Ecole des Filles to John Cleland's classic Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (Fanny Hill) which has remained in print since I 748/9, the book examines how some of the most famous erotic books of all time were first published, how they were received by their readers, and how they have endured to the present day. Very Good in Very Good dustwrapper, the spine of which is sunned.
