About This Item
Printed for the Proprieters and sold by R.H. Kelham, Chelmsford, I. Keymer, Colchester, Longman, Hurst, Orme & Brown, London, 1814, 1st edition. Black, half leather binding with black cloth boards. Five raised bands to spine, gilt lettering to spine. 11.5ins x 9.25ins, illustrated title page, iv, dedication page, 280pp plus 12 plates (1 double page ). Also 27 illustrations within the text, making a total of 39 illustrations as required. This volume covers the hundreds of Becontree, Waltham and Ongar plus the Royal Liberty of Havering-atte-Bower. It had been intended to cover the whole of Essex, but there was insufficient support from the subscribers. This is all that was published. Nb the title page gives the date of 1814, but it was actually issued in three parts between 1814 and 1817 - the portrait of Sir Thomas Smith is dated 1817. The engravings were made by the authors husband - John Ogborne. This copy lacks the printed list of plates - but it is supplied loose as a facsimile. A reprint of an old map of Essex has been pasted to the front endpapers. Old press cuttings pasted to first blank page after the endpapers. Some heavy foxing and staining. Corners rubbed and worn. Good only.
