About This Item

London: Day & Son, 1865. First edition. Hardcover. Maroon cloth lettered in gilt, rebacked with most of original spine laid down. Aeg. Very good. Jones, Owen. Small folio, 28 x 22 cm. 52 chromolithograph plates on twenty-six leaves by Owen Jones and Henry Warren, on stone by Albert Warren. Each illustration and accompanying text in a distinct decorative border. GORDON N. RAY [The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1914] notes that in his later years Owen turned to "original designs of his own." This mid-Victorian time period was the heyday of chromolithography printing with this a brilliant example. Embossed cloth decorated in gilt and green with gilt lettering. Lovely example of Victorian binding, beveled edges, endpapers toned, slight toning to a few fore-edges not affecting plates which are brilliant and clean. Endpapers renewed, front cover lettered and decorated in gilt with green rectangular border in gilt.
