Closed five inch tear on lower front hinge- top fore-corners worn, board showing on bottom fore-ecorners, tight and unmarked, phptp album pages at rear have been removed. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; Ornate embossed leather gilt, two nickel clasps, 12.5 by 10.5 by 4.25 inches, profusely illustrated, steel engraving, chromolith color pages, main paginations are 1075 and 400 pages but many smaller paginations. .

Folio (420 x 270 mm), 2 vols., in one, maps, 50 engraved plates, a nice clean copy, contemporary calf, rubbed, upper cover detached, head of spine frayed. Provenance: MS notes on the family of James and Thomas Macready to front endpapers; presentation inscription to first leaf of text 'Easter Sunday 7th April 1822, the gift of Ariebella Jones, to her beloved daughter Catherine Jones.' A beautiful, huge Holy Bible published in London in the 19th-century. Ornate family Bibles were quite popular in the second half of the 1800s, and this tome is a fine example of enormous, folio family Bibles. This particular Bible contains commentaries from John Stoughton.

This edition is beautifully illustrated with engraved plates of Bible scenes and notes and explanations, as well as a decorative spine and cover!

Meant to be lifetime book, the center of the personal, spiritual and family life. 12 1/4 in. x 10 1/4 in.Brown full calf, modeled and beveled, divided into seven elaborate, floriated segments, tooled in blind, surrounding a large (6 1/2 in. x 3 1/2 in.) segment, bearing the title (Holy Bible) in a Blackletter-style font. Atop is a reclining angel holding a sheaf of wheat, head haloed by golden rays. Five raised bands to spine, with elaborate gilded vignettes to compartments one, three, four and six, book title in compartment two, and "Bible Dictionary and Cities of the Bible" in compartment five. Past conservation evident, most likely rebacking. Rear board repeats the front, though here completely in blind. All edges marbled. Liverpool: Caxton Press, printed by Nuttall, Fisher, and Dixon, no date [circa 1840]. [Bible] FINELY BOUND AND ILLUSTRATED. Folio (41 x 26cm), pp.[2] 960 [2]. With 45 engraved plates by various artists, including an engraved frontispiece and a decorated title page. Plates dated variously between 1815 and 1839. Contemporary tan full panelled calf, with gilt titles to burgundy label on spine, and further gilt decoration. All edges marbled, and brown endpapers. A black ink ownership to the front pastedown, dated 1842. Heavy toning to leaves up to about p.120; quite crisp and clean thereafter. A 3cm tear to the margin of the plate facing p.124, with moderate spotting and a few small nicks and marks to numerous other plates. Upper joint starting, with moderate general wear and bumping to binding. Very good. This edition seems to have first appeared around 1815, with commentary by the Wesleyan Preacher James Wood (1751-1840), but this copy has plates dated as late as 1839 inserted into it.
