First edition. Two volumes. vi, 7-487p; iv, 5-576p. Illustrated with five engraved plates, two folding. Engraved portrait frontispiece in each volume (not called for). Bound in full contemporary calf with marbled endpapers, t.e.g., the spines ornately gilt with renewed title labels in maroon and black. Thomas, who founded the American Antiquarian Society in 1812, based the History on his long fascination with his trade as well as upon his very extensive library of books and newspapers which he had collected to prepare such a history.
