Description:
1682 History of Theodosius I Roman Empire Pagan v Christianity ROME Olympics
Esprit Fléchier was a 17th-century French author who composed two important historical works – the histories of Cardinal Ximenes and Emperor Theodosius I – which are known to be highly accurate and insightful. While known primarily for his written sermons, spiritual memoires, and religious writings, these historical works have been Flechier's most desirable works.
This book, 'Histoire de Theodose le Grand', covers the life and political reign of Roman Emperor Theodosius I. Theodosius was the last emperor to rule the entire the Roman Empire and played a critical role in the establishment of Christianity in the Empire and banned pagan rituals which were common in both Roman and Greek cultures. Theodosius is also remembered for prohibiting the holding of Olympic Games following the games of 393 AD (for the association with pagan rituals).
This 1682 third edition is more complete and extensive than the first edition.

E. Hartnall, 1841 . 1st Edition. VG+. First Edition 6.7 x 9.2 cm leather backed wooden boards with illustrations taken from the book to the front and rear with gilt stamped titles to the spine. All edges gilt, pale yellow endpapers, 116pp with 4 engraved plates. The book is in much better condition than is usually found and unusually the boards have been illustrated with similar illustrations to two of those in the book. It is likely that, as with copies of this edition, the boards are made from timber recovered from the wreck. There is rubbing to the spine tips and minor loss of 1-2mm at the foot of the spine and also to the boards where there has been rounding to the corners with minor loss to the bottom corner of the rear board. Internally there is minor loss to the front free endpaper and an associated 2.5cm closed tear along the front fore edge. There is no name, inscription or bookplate and the pages are surprisingly clean with creases to the very tips of the the top corners of a… Read More

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, 1927. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, boards faintly soiled, ink date and owner bookplate of Robert N. Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
