While D'Aubigne was the most carefully read by 19th Century scholar as well as the general population, he fell out of favor in the early 20th Century. Today scholars note that he was among the finest of the Christian historiographers, that is, the new the methods of Leopold von Ranke though his Christian presuppositions shine through. While many scholars attempt to view the Reformation in an objective study of sources, it often is accompanied with presuppositions that do not recognize the possibility that God is active in history. Just as the critics of C.S. Lewis often minimize his writing which openly comes from a Christian point of view, the same criticism can be applied to D'Aubgine though modern students of historiography such as John B. Roney has brought his significance back into perspective. He notes in this 1846 edition: "I have revised this edition line by line and word by word, it is the only one I have corrected." Later on the Relgious Tract Society offered this in a very large one volume cheap edition which influenced those for whom the 5 volume set was too expensive.
