Originally published in three volumes in 1854-56, this single-volume English language version is an abridgment of the three-quarter million-word 1868 edition. The period from Rome's founding through Julius Caesar is covered, to be continued in Mommsen's "The Provinces of the Roman Empire from Caesar to Diocletian," and other works. Translated from the German by W. P. Dickson, introduced by Anthony Grafton and edited by C. J. Shepherd.
