London: The Folio Society. Near Fine. 2007. Hardcover. Stated second printing, 2007. A deluxe, hefty Folio Society edition of the famous history of Rome by Germany's Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903). Originally published in three volumes in 1854-56, this single-volume English language version is an abridgment of the three-quarter million-word 1868 edition. The period from Rome's founding through Julius Caesar is covered, to be continued in Mommsen's "The Provinces of the Roman Empire from Caesar to Diocletian," and other works. Translated from the German by W. P. Dickson, introduced by Anthony Grafton and edited by C. J. Shepherd. With numerous black & white illustrations and 17 maps, including at endpapers. --- In royal blue buckram-covered boards backed in brown leather, with image of the she-wolf of Rome suckling Romulus and Remus in gilt to cover; spine titling in gilt. TEG (top edge gilt) and with sewn-in blue satin placemarker. Volume protected in brown paper-covered slipcase. --- An excellent, newish, tightly-bound copy though with a couple of small scratches to spine. Slipcase with minor rubbing, else in great shape.
