London: Bradbuty & Evans, 1849. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine. Xii, 189 Pp + 2 Pp Ads + Original Card Covers Mounted And Bound In At Rear. Bound With Two Complete Sets Of Illustrations, One The Usual Black And White, The Other Hand-Colored. In An Elaborately Gilt Zaehnsdorf Binding Signed And Dated 1900, 5 Bands, Minutely Gilt In All Compartments And On Covers, Top Edge Gilt, Red Cloth Endpapers At Front And Rear, Half-Title Present. Extremely Well Preserved, Almost No Wear, Gilt Still Brilliant, And Front Board Rebound With New Cords Without Rebacking. Pages Clean And Without Foxing, Although There Is Some Foxing To Tissue Guards On The Colored Plates. Custom Green Slipcase. Bookplate, Which Just Fell Off Front Pastedown, Of George Clinton Ward (1863-1933). Ward Was An Engineer And California Utility Company Executive, A Native Of New York, Where His First Work Was In The Construction Of Iron Bridges And In Railroad Engineering. He Was Chief Engineer For The Racquette Lake Railroad In Ny, Owned By Collis P. Huntington. In 1905 Henry E. Huntington Persuaded Ward To Come To California. Ward Became General Manager First For The Huntington Land And Improvement Company And Then For The Pacific Light And Power Company, Where He Was In Charge Of The Big Creek Hydro-Electric Generating Project. He Was Made Vice-President Of The Southern California Edison Company In 1917 And Then President In 1932. It Appears Likely That The Book Was A Gift From Huntington, The Bookplate Has A Later Presentation To Very Prominent Los Angeles Psychiatrist.
