This is a second printing of The History of Ships, an extremely popular book written by the British naval historian Peter Kemp (1904-1992). It was first published in 1978 and was continued to be reprinted; you will see the 2002 printing listed as a first edition, but the first edition was printed in 1977.
It is a fascinating history of boats and ships, packed with photos and illustrations. Kemp. a former Royal Navy officer, begins with the first seafaring peoples, talks abut the transition from sail to steam, the evolution of steam engines, and the transition from wood to steel. He ends with submarines, ice-breakers and nuclear capability.

It's a big heavy book. 288 pages, 9" x 12" and 4 lbs.
The dust jacket has lots of shelfwear.
The book appears to not have been read; there are no marks of any kind in or on it.
