About This Item

New York: Harper & Brother, 1852. Six volumes. Original publisher's cloth, boards blind- stamped, spines gilt. Spines of final two volumes heavily chipped. Spine ends and corners lightly worn, spine cloth a bit faded. Contemporary bookplate on front pastedown of first volume. Volumes four through six with double titlepages. Light foxing and dust soiling. Good plus. The George Brinley copy, with his first bookplate, of Richard Hildreth's classic work on the history of colonial America and the early United States. The first three volumes, published in 1849, cover the history of America from Columbus to the adoption of the Constitution. The final three volumes discuss the United States during the first five presidential administrations, from Washington to Monroe. An exhaustive and pioneering historical work on America, owned by one of the greatest 19th-century pioneers of Americana book collecting. HOWES H472.
