About This Item

NY: Macmillan, 1934. First Thus. Hardcover. Very Good. 1st printing of the revised, 1934 edition of the authors' 1921 work. Maroon cloth with titles blindstamped & decorated. 702pp. plus index and appendices: "Constitution of the United States," "Population of the United States by State," "Table of Presidents," " Population of the Outlying Possessions 1930 and 1920," "A Topical Syllabus." Illus. In the Preface, the Beards state, "This is no superficial revision (of the 1921 book). On the contrary the original text has been entirely rewritten and thoroughly simplified to meet the new demands on high schools..." The authors go on to say that due to changes in the "spirit and substance of historical writing and the rapid advance of social studies in the schools," changes in their approach to writing the history were made. Near the conclusion of the Preface they say, Mankind lives not by politics alone nor by bread alone but also by things of the spirit which form ideals, inspire love of beauty, and ennoble action." To that end they added "fresh illustrations ... particularly from American works of art.' Former owner's name / address on ffep. Paste downs and rear free endpaper have extensive notes in pencil. We see a few pencil marginalia in the text. Moderate wear at the extremities. Hinges sound. A very good copy. Very scarce in this printing.
