Printed for the Author by S.C. Ustick, & Co., Philadelphia: ., 1797. pp. vii, (1) [Blank], (9)-179, (1) [Errata] + Frontis. Frontis and title page dampstained. Loss of frontis margin and plate torn. Title page and first two pages torn without loss. Pages 36/37 and 115/116 torn without loss. Foxed. Early manuscript ownership of Michael (?) Speakman, Jr. October, 1802 on title page. 160 mm. Original full leather binding. Original leather spine label. Front board stained. The frontis, though in poor condition is rarely found in copies offered for sale. Hardbound. Fair. Hawkins went from Charleston, SC to West Africa (Igbo Land) between 1793-1795. He wrote extensively about the tribal war then in full swing. He gives much information about the customs and social life of the people of West Africa, as well as the slave trade. Description:
Second edition, full leather, Troy, New York, 1797. Includes the occasionally missing frontis. Condition is Good or better: original full leather boards in above average condition with modest general wear. Only the bottom front corners show slightly more than minimal wear. The other corners, edges, spine and hinges are sound. Binding is sound. Leather label on spine still legible although that is not well seen on images. Interior is likewise in good condition. Only writing is old faded ink signature on back free blank. No other writing; mild to moderate foxing throughout. The laid cotton paper pages are still supple and easily read. The title page has a 3 inch closed tear expertly repaired (see image). There are some minor edge tears seen throughout but none affecting text. Paginates: blanks(2), frontis, (i)-180, blank(1).
