Presentation copy by the author, possibly a variant binding (complete with gold wax seal at spine). Noted flaws notwithstanding, a handsome copy of this rather scarce volume. Light shelf/edge wear, moderate wear/chipping at head and heel, tips through, spine lightly toned, joints starting, image plates tipped in at front and rear pastedowns, presentation slip (signed by author) tipped in at ffep, waterstain and stamp of Lehigh Univ. on ffep, minor sporadic foxing, dust staining at top of text block, else tight, bright and unmarred. Burgundy cloth boards, gilt lettering, in blind decorative elements, wax seal on spine, frontispiece, tissueguards. 8vo. 797pp. Illus. (b/w plates). Biographical Sketches. Index. Portrait of William B. Hoswell at tipped in at front pastedown, very early plate of Bowdoin College tipped in at rear pastedown.
