Pocket bible and psalms from the late Stuart period A very attractive example, uniting late 17th-century editions of the King James Bible and Psalms in an elegant English red morocco binding, in small pocket-sized format designed for personal devotion. Two works bound in a single volume, vigesimo-quarto in half-sheets, (121 x 56 mm). Late 18th/early 19th-century red morocco, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Bible with integral engraved title page. Bible bound without [pi]1, ordering the commemoration of the execution of Charles I, both works otherwise collate complete. Early notation "The Holy Bible" to title page, front pastedown with inscription "James West given him by His loving mother January 18 / [17]74", further inscription to rear free endpaper "James West given to Him by his Effectionate [sic] Mother J.W. My son hear the instruction of thy Father and forsake note the law of thy Mother. Proverbs 1 chapter VIII". Joints and extremities neatly restored with front free endpaper sympathetically renewed. Bible leaf 2F2 with chip at foot with slight loss, 2P9 and 3B10 of same with short closed tear into text without loss, terminal page of Psalms with faint tape residue in gutter.
