Philadelphia: A. Gorton & Company, 1881. Leather Bound. Good. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folio. Variously paginated. Hardcover bound in full embossed leather with cover designs on raised panels in elaborate gilt. The binding is rubbed and worn. The spine is sunned and a bit dried, and the front hinge is starting at the top (the beginnings of a crack can be seen at the top two inches). All edges gilt. The text block is sound. The text is toned but generally clean. The last leaf is detached but present ("List of readings and renderings preferred by the American Committee, recorded at their desire". The final page is for inserting famiily photos, but there are no family photos in this Bible. The Register before the New Testament shows that this was the marriage Bible for Charles Morton Southall and Ida M. Hester of Chicago, Illinois in 1892. The family settled in Florence, Alabama, and several births and marriages are listed in Florence up until the 1930s.

Includes a 30-page publisher's catalog (erratically paginated) at the rear. Hardcover bound in full leather. The binding shows some old wear and cover stains but is quite sound. Sturdy hinges. Early owner's light pencil inscription on the front flyleaf and a later doctor's inscription on the front pastedown. The text block is sound, and the text is foxed, sometimes quite heavily. Still, a sturdy copy of a scarce work and in the original binding. From a Mocksville (Davie County), North Carolina 19th century doctor's collection.

There is a little splitting to the leather on the rear outer hinge near the foot of the spine. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Untrimmed fore edge has some brown stains that stay on the edges of the margins. A couple of handwritten dates are written in pencil on the last page of text. Contains several illustrations, mostly portraits.

From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
