Rebound in half leather, gilt title and ruling, raised bands, blind stamped compartments, marbled paper boards. A.E.R. New endpapers. [20], 855, [14], 91 pp. Engraved portraits and decorations in text. Lacks engraved frontispiece. Separate titles. Bookplate of William John MacDonnell. Rust spot and perforation, paper repair to tail edge of half-title. Occasional rust spotting and foxing. Paper repair to gutter of title page. Caussin was a Jesuit preacher who was for a time confessor to King Louis XIII of France. His famous treatise, The Holy Court, is a guide to courtiers and noblemen on living a Christian life. It was first published in 1624 in French. [Wing C1550; Darling 604; Arber I, 304; Callard C132; Lowndes 394]. Bound with: Prosopographia: or, some Select Pourtraitures and Lives of Ancient and Modern Illustrious Personages. Collected Out of their Pictures, Books, and Medals. Originally compiled and written in French by Andrew Thevet, Chief Cosmographer to Henry the third, King of France and Polan. Newly Translated into English by some Learned and Eminent Persons; and generally by Geo: Gerbier, alias D'ouvilly, Esq. And now also in this Edition are further added the Pourtraitures & Lives of Five other Selected Eminent Persons of Ancient and Modern Times...All which are Illustrated and Imbellished, with the Effigies or Sculptures of the said Worthy Personages in Copper Plates, according to the French Original. Cambridge: Printed by John Hayes for William Lee, 1676. Comprises the third part of Lee's edition of Thomas North's Plutarch, originally published in 1657.
