A very nearly complete run (lacking only issues nos. 0, 131, and 132) of the French comics weekly, issues 8-12 pp. each, housed in two volumes, the first containing issues 1-52, the second with issues 53-130, each issue containing comics such as Popeye and Thimble Theater, Mandrake the Magician, Marc Orian, La Patrouille des Aigles, Diane Detective, The Lone Ranger, Dinglehoofer und His Dog Adolph, and Prince Valiant, the adventures of Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs in serialized chapters, and puzzles. A couple of issues with minor restorations, a few issues with very minor tears, some issues slightly trimmed, overall excellent. Large 4to. Cloth boards, original issues bound in. Paris (Opera Mundi) 1937-1940. A rare and sought-after French comics journal from the inter-war period, from the same editors as Le Journal de Mickey, a weekly magazine which published the adventures of Mickey Mouse, and Robinson. The first popular French comics, or bandes dessinées, began appearing in the early 1900s. In 1934 Paul Winckler, who had already been distributing comics through Opera Mundi, made a deal with King Features Syndicate to create the Journal de Mickey. The immediate success of this magazine led to the creation of numerous other comics publications worldwide. Hop-Là was the first appearance in French of Prince Valiant, created in 1937 and now the world's longest-running comic strip. Incredibly rare; as of February 2019, WorldCat does not locate a single holding in North America.
