Synopsis

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859. After nine years in Jesuit schools, he went to Edinburgh University, receiving a degree in medicine in 1881. He then became an eye specialist in Southsea, with a distressing lack of success. Hoping to augment his income, he wrote his first story, A Study in Scarlet . His detective, Sherlock Holmes, was modeled in part after Dr. Joseph Bell of the Edinburgh Infirmary, a man with spectacular powers of observation, analysis, and inference. Conan Doyle may have been influenced also by his admiration for the neat plots of Gaboriau and for Poe’s detective, M. Dupin. After several rejections, the story was sold to a British publisher for £25, and thus was born the world’s best-known and most-loved fictional detective. Fifty-nine more Sherlock Holmes adventures followed. Once, wearying of Holmes, his creator killed him off, but was forced by popular demand to resurrect him. Sir Arthur—he had been knighted for this defense of the British cause in his The Great Boer War—became an ardent Spiritualist after the death of his son Kingsley, who had been wounded at the Somme in World War I. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle died in Sussex in 1930.

About Modetz Errands-n-More, L.L.C.

Modetz Errands-n-More is committed to providing each customer with the highest standard of customer service. We attempt and almost always succeed in shipping every order within 24 hours. We cannot, however, guarantee this every time, but there have only been a few orders where this was not the case. We strive to maintain the highest feedback store by going above and beyond for each and every customer, regardless of the cost of their order. We look forward to serving you. There is a particular item that you are in search of that is not listed under our inventory currently, feel free to make a request. We have over 40,000 books and 1,300 cd's, and as we try to be as detailed as possible in our listings, getting them all online is a slow process. There is a chance that we may have it, so just let us know. We appreciate all of our new customers and we would like to thank all of our repeat buyers, as your loyalty and patronage is what we strive for. FYI...while some of our listings say that they ship from FL, we recently moved to MI. Regardless, orders are shipped so quickly, that this location difference makes little to no difference with respect to arrival times. Thank you and happy reading!
