Toronto: Random House. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket; Owner name and address on verso of . front free endpaper, jacket scuffed, lower edges of front boards soiled.. 1967. First Printing. Hardcover. 0394429354 . Introductions by Joseph Lelyveld. Beige cloth with titles stamped in gilt on front boards and spine. Photo endpapers. The dramatic story behind this book begins with Cole's risky, but successful scheme to get himself reclassified by the South African government from "African" to "Colored". He then had greater mobility to photograph the devastating effects of apartheid on its black citizens. With further peril, he was able to leave his country with his film to secure publication abroad. As Parr and Badger note in The Photobook: A History, Vol. II, (p. 106) , this is an important book because it not only had a deep political impact, but he and his images were banned in South Africa for decades and Cole lived out the rest of his years in permanent exile. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 192 pages .

Description:
Routledge, 1990. 8vo size trade paperback; 390 pages including index From back: "This is a unique study, continuing the work of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, and using the techniques of phenomenology against the prevailing nihilism of our culture. It expands our understanding of the human potential for spiritual self-realization by interpreting it as the developing of a bodily-felt awareness informing our gestures and movements. The author argues that a psychological focus on our experiences of well-being and pathology as embodied beings contribute significantly to a historically relevant critique of idealogy. It also provides an essential touchstone in experience for a fruitful individual and collective response to the dangers of nihilism." Edgewear, moderate wear to covers with sunned spine; marginalia, underlining and very light highlighting on least 58 pages prior to page 107; two previously folded page corners, some stray ink marks on outside pages.
