The first book, The Town House, tells the story of Martin Reed, a serf born in 1381 who resents the feudal system that undermines him. When circumstances change, he begins a new life as a free man, builds the house, and founds a family. The second book, The House at Old Vine, is about the house's next owner, John Tradescant, who is a gardener and botanist. The third book, The House at Sunset, is about the house's final owner, a woman named Lavinia, who is struggling to keep the house in her family.
