About This Item
London, John Murray, , 1819. 8vo. pp. 100, including half title. Contemporary gilt-ruled biscuit calf, headcap renewed. Armorial bookplate of 3rd Viscount Sidmouth (1811-1876; he married a member of the Pelew family, whose arms appear on the right). Near contemporary signature of a member of the Addington family to flyleaf. Rogers' poem was printed in both quarto and octavo formats in 1819, the year of its first publication. Eclipsed by some of his great contemporaries, Rogers was praised for the musicality of his verse, and his literary breakfasts were a feature of the social scene. An early owner has picked up on Rogers' comment on p. 81, that he 'would say something in favour of the old fashioned triplet, which I have ventured to use so often'. 41 times, according to the owner, who has noted each one in pencil in the margin, and counted.
