Peter Newell. 8vo (6" x 9"), decorative red cloth with gold lettering on spine and front cover with gold caricature of "The Bellman" by Peter Newell on front cover, Illustrated by Newell with colored frontispiece (with tissue guard) and 39 B&W glossy plates, page decorations by Robert Murray Wright, top of pages gilded [t.e.g.], [archival clear plastic sleeve added], xli, [xlii-lvi], [xxvi + 248 pages with untrimmed edges. BRILLIANT original illustrations, and Carroll's full text. Other poems include selections from Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, Rhymne and Reason, & Silvie and Bruno. Very Good Plus condition for book, which is tight with clean pages and unfoxed delightful plates. Minimal wear to cloth with slight rubbing to edges. Spine gilt is faded; title & The Bellman on front cover quite bright. Peter Newell (1862 - 1924) was an American artist, illustrator, and writer. Newell often illustrated the works of other authors, such as Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, John Kendrick Bangs, and Lewis Carroll. Harpers selected Newell to re-interpret the famous Tenniel illustrations for the Alice books. This Newell illustrated edition also appeared in green cloth and a cream-colored edition.
Synopsis
If-and the thing is wildly possible-the charge of writing nonsense were ever brought against the author of this brief but instructive poem, it would be based, I feel convinced, on the line (in p.4)
