New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1941. First American. Poor. A poor copy in blue cloth with gilt titles It appears that some liquid (coffee?) was spilled on the book, resulting not only in some staining, but also in causing many of the pages to be stuck together, (see photos) They might possibly be separable by steaming, but in its present condition, many pages cannot be read without tearing them apart The primary interest for this volume, therefore is the personal bookplate on the front pastedown of the famous actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr So I've priced it solely for its provenance, and not for the book itself
The original dust jacket has been tipped in the rear of the book It is a photo album of pictures of England as it was before WWII and was published in the midst of the Battle of Britain (1940-41) as many of the buildings shown were being destroyed by German bombing.

Description:
G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1941. first edition. hardcover. very good: mild shelfwear, bumped corners, toning to endpapers and some pages, text clean, binding tight./good: corner wear, scuffing, age wear, NOT price clipped ($2.75). 4to, unpaginated. from front flap: Primarily a book of photographs (and such photographs!)--it is illumined on every page by the comments of Mrs. Miller, sometimes an appropriate poem, sometimes a personal episode, sometimes a quotation from Evelyn's Diary--or Pepys's. The mood varies, and occasionally, Mrs. Miller draws from her store of English memories a richly humorous reference or a curious item of old history. Always her pungent and telling paragraphs give point and added pleasure to the quite extraordinarily beautiful photographs she has chosen." #00668.
