New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1961. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 342pp., illustrated. A very good copy in the publisher's tan cloth, lacking the dust jacket. Spine faded, and a touch of foxing to the edges. This copy SIGNED and warmly INSCRIBED by Romulo on the front free endpaper in the year of publication to Pittsburgh philanthropist and U. S. Army General Richard K Mellon: "To General RIchard K. Mellon with the best wishes and high personal regard and esteem of the author, Carlos P. Romulo Sept. 5, 1961 Washington (8), D. C." Romulo was a major figure in both the US and Philippine militaries, serving as an aide to Douglas MacArthur during World War II. He later served as an Ambassador from the Philippines to the United States, as well as in other diplomatic roles. Mellon, who served in both world wars, was a scion of the prominent Mellon family of Pittsburgh, and was a major figure in the postwar urban renewal efforts in that city.
