Ian Hamilton,1 three-color folding map, plus 9 other maps and plans, 32- page rear publishers catalogue.). A good copy only of the First English edition. The red cloth has unevenly darkened and there is a cup shadow on the rear board. The spine is well-rounded and unfrayed and the binding is tight, if slightly cocked. The original black endpapers are intact but there appears to be a glue shadow on the front endpaper from the removal of a bookplate. There is a repaired front hinge break. The contents are foxed on the prelims primarily, else fine.

The cloth has good color but is shelfworn, with faint scuff marks on the front cover. The original black endpoapers are intact. There is dampstaining to the lower edges of the prelims, with traces of a blue ink affecting the lower edge of the front endpaper and the half-title. The prelims are also lightly foxed but the contents are clean.

Ian Hamilton's March was the second of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper dispatches sent from the front in South Africa during the Boer War. During this conflict Churchill was captured by the Boers. His daring escape made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. There were three English-language editions – British, U.S. and Canadian. The U.S. and Canadian editions were published in November 1900. The Canadian is both the scarcest and most attractive of the three first editions, differing considerably in appearance from its British and U.S. counterparts, with a tan cloth binding illustrated with crossed Union Flag and White Ensign on the front cover and a red fleur-de-lis on the spine.
