A tight, clean, sound copy in blue cloth with gold lettering on the spine and gold lettering and graphics on the front with only very, very minor overall shelf wear plus the original owner's name and a date in ink on the front endpaper. An examination of the origin of the idea of peace. The author has looked both the ideas which inspired the major philosophical and political doctrines of antiquity plus the most significant literary works of those times. The idea presented is that violent warlike demands and the encouragement to heroism have often been inspired by both writers and philosophers but that peaceful undercurrents and tendencies have also always present and active in antiquity. The author was a member of the anti-Fascist Resistance in Italy and is a convinced pacifist. Translated from the Italian by Richard Dunn. Endnotes, indexed, 333p.. First American Edition. Hard Cover.
