Oxonii - E Theatro Sheldoniano, 1709 Book. GOOD ONLY. Hardcover. First edition.. A scarce collection of the letters of Ignatius of Loyola, with extensive notes by John Pearson. First edition. In Latin and Greek. Ignatius of Loyola (1491 July 31, 1556) was a Spanish knight from a Basque noble family, hermit, priest since 1537, and theologian, who founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and was its first Superior General. Ignatius emerged as a religious leader during the Counter-Reformation. Loyola's devotion to the Catholic Church was characterised by unquestioning obedience to the Catholic Church's authority and hierarchy. Copperplate inscription to front blank, of one William Smith of Manchester, dated 1860. Condition: In a calf binding. Externally, rather worn. Backstrip missing from spine and some marks to boards. Front board held by cords only. Internally, firmly bound. Loss to top of title page, not affecting text. Generally bright with the occasional handling mark. Overall: GOOD ONLY.
