About This Item

New York: Dover Publications, 1959. "A Rational Exposition of Stigmata, Poltergeists, Seances, ESP and Telepathy, Hypnotism, Firewalking, Mystical Experience, Lycanthropy, Peyotl Visions, Auras, Levitation, Automatic Writing." 8vo size trade paperback; 551 pages with some black and white illustrations, followed by a few pages of publisher's catalogue. From back: "(This book) shows again and again how the apparently convincing evidence for supernatural and occult phenomena vanishes into an insubstantial tissue of trickery and delusion whenever it is closely examined - and in spite of this, how the belief in the occult still flourishes... Hundreds of cases of supposedly occult phenomena are cited: crystal gazing, automatic writing, table-turning, the mediumistic trance, Indian rope trick, shamanism, spiritualism, dowsing, telepathy, clairvoyance, ghosts, apparitions, extra-sensory perception, psychokinesis and countless others... (The book) is of considerable interest as an exposition of certain characteristics types of abnormal psychology...the author demonstrates the subconscious mechanisms involved in the most frequently encountered types of delusions and shows how such factors as mental dissociation, suggestion, hysteria, hypnotism and such drugs and marijuana or peyote produce the hallucination, visions, and voices and other phenomena..." A Reading Copy with wear and soil to covers; light soil or light foxing to outside pages; lifting of the lamination film at edges. Inside covers have some light foxing. Fep and title page have impressions of scribbling as if someone were trying to work a pen and had no ink; fep has some stray pencil marks. We noted underlining, marginalia on at least 29 pages toward the front of the book and fingermarks in the margin of several pages. Spine is creased and binding appears to be uneven so that pages appear deckle edged when they should be flush. . Trade Paperback. Reading Copy/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
