About This Item
London: Henry Lea, 1861. 64pp. With four lithographic plates (one folding). Disbound. A trifle dusty, recent typed lettering-piece to verso of folding plate. A rare survival of the sole edition of an illustrated account of the 1861 Tooley Street fire at Cotton's Wharf near London Bridge station. The blaze began of 22nd June and ranged for two weeks, causing £2 million pounds worth of damage. The only victim of the conflagration was firefighter James Braidwood (1800-1861), founder of one of the world's first municipal fire services in Edinburgh in 1824, and the first director of the London Fire Engine Establishment (which was eventually to become the London Fire Brigade). COPAC records copies at three locations (BL, Bishopsgate, and NLS); OCLC adds no further. . First edition. 8vo.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.
We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.
We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
