London.: George C. Leighton.. Volume LXXXII.. 1883.. Three-quarter leather-bound volume, 16.25 x 11 inches; 648 pp. plus 48 pp. Holiday Number. Tightly bound with bumped corners. Tipped in centerfolds. Many issues state: "Foreign Postage" next to masthead on front page. Tears and paper loss to several pages in margins and elsewhere. Damp stain at top of color portrait of Adelina Patti. Two sheets (four pages) loose: never bound. Numerous illustrated articles of interest, including a fascinating piece on the proposed Manchester Ship Canal. Extensive coverage given to the Imperial Coronation at Moscow (with sketches of the Kremlin) and to the International Fisheries Exhibition at Kensington "Designed to Illustrate the Fisheries of the World." Dates pertaining to the Moscow Coronation and the London Fisheries Exhibition permitted those with a passionate interest in each event to attend both. Coverage of the Fisheries Exhibition included a front page illustration (May 26) depicting the lavish "Pavilion of the Prince and Princess of Wales," located on the Exhibition grounds in an open area down-wind from the Fishery Buildings assigned Sweden, Norway, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Located at the end of the breezeway in which the Royal Pavilion is situated there is present a modest structure identified on the Exhibition's ground-plan as "Native Guano," no doubt a "must-visit" site (see pp 400 and 508). Coverage of the Coronation in Moscow features numerous double-page illustrations of the event, with full-page portraits of Alexander III and the lovely pearl-adorned Empress. Additional two-page illustrated coverage is given to cathedrals: St. Paul's, Canterbury, and Christchurch; also trawling on the Dogger Bank and The Yarmouth Herring Fishery, and a two page color plate (with flaws) by Sturgess: "A False Start: Derby." Also featured are single page Sketches of British Columbia, Laos, Bechuana Land, Tunis, New Guinea; Cairo, Scenery on the Rock Island and Union Pacific RR, two views of the Brooklyn Bridge, double-page Sketches in the Kremlin, and much more. An interesting and profusely illustrated volume with considerable attention directed toward World Fisheries and solemn events in Moscow. .
