London.: George C. Leighton.. Volume LCIII.. July - Dec 1882.. Firmly bound volume, three-quarter leather, 16 x 12 inches, 692 pp. Slight abrasion at bottom corner of both front and rear covers along spine edge. Some issues labelled "Foreign Postage" on front page. Volume contains two copies of December 2 issue, while December 9 and 16 issues not present--perhaps the "Christmas Number" published in their stead. Water damage at bottom of "They Were Married!"--the ponderously long work of fiction accompanying the Christmas Number. Color plates: Christmas Cards (9 images) and "Married for Love." Copious Anglo-Egyptian War illustrations; the war began in earnest with the bombardment of Alexandria in July, 1882. Numerous double page illustrations focusing on battles waged during the conflict; also three extraordinary folded battle illustrations: "The Bombardment of Alexandria" sheet size 16 x 45 inches; "The Battle of Tel-El-Kebir" sheet size 16 x 45 inches; a second "Battle of Tel-El-Kebir" sheet size 23 x 30 inches. The last two were the work of Richard Caton Woodville, Jr. while the first was the work of J. R. Wells. Also included is a once-folded sheet "British Ships Engaged in the Bombardment of Alexandria," which has been cut into four parts each featuring an individual ship on sheet size 16 x 11 1/2 inches. Two of the illustrations are by J. R. Wells. The Anglo-Egyptian War dominates the July through October issues, while the remaining two months feature parades before the public and reviews of the troops before the Queen; also ceremonies in which Officers are decorated by the Queen. Additional double-page views include Views in and Around Reading, Sketch of Halifax, Sketch of Carlisle, Sketch of Plymouth, Sketch of Southampton, Sketches of Vancouver B.C., Sketches on Lower Thames (all double page) and Sketches at Hong Kong. Double page illustration: The Australian Cricketers. Several color plates: Christmas Cards (9 individual cards) "Married for Love". Coverage also of the Eira Arctic Expedition; double-page "Fire" depicting horse-drawn fire rig; double-page view "Royal Courts of Justice," and much more.

A compelling volume with remarkable illustrations, with particular emphasis on the Anglo-Egyptian War. .
