London.: George C. Leighton.. 1875.. Firmly bound volume, three-quarter leather, 16 x 12 inches, 640 pp. Slight abrasion at bottom free-edge corner of front cover. A number of newspapers have the term "Foreign Postage" printed beside the masthead on the first page. The volume lacks pp 285-286. The volume features copious illustrations including numerous fold-out plates. Much coverage devoted to the Prince of Wales' travels to India on HMS Serapis. Full page illustrations relating to the Prince's trip include his travel through the Suez Canal; the Arrival in Bombay Harbour; an Elephant Battle staged on his behalf; The Prince's First Elephant Ride, Map of India Showing Prince of Wales Route; and much more. Attention to this trip dominates approximately the last half of the volume. Numerous fold-out plates record various aspects of India in the context of the Prince's visit. Volume also includes extensive coverage of the Spanish Civil War. Overall very good clean condition. Illustrated full-page features of American or Canadian Interest include: Haymaking; American Religious Camp Meeting; The Ladies’ Window at the New York Post Office; Shad-Fishing on the Hudson; Tourists at the Falls of Niagara; Driving Cattle into a Corral, Nebraska (unfolded image size 12½ x 19 inches); Bathing at Long Branch, New Jersey; The Game of La Crosse as Played in Canada; and much more. Illustrated features of British or Scottish Interest include: Pembroke College Cambridge; Wick Harbour During the Herring Fishing (folded 13 x 18½ inches); The Wine Supply of England: Messrs Gilbey’s London Establishment; and more. Illustrated features of African Interest include: The Transvaal, or South African Gold Fields; H. M. Stanley's Boat "Livingstone" Carried Overland in Africa; etc. Illustrated features of Asian interest include: Court Customs in Burmah (two illustrations on one page); Street Scene in Hong-Kong by the late E. Hilderbrandt; Natives of Burmah; the Signal Pagoda at Rangoon; View of Poonah Near Bombay; A Street in Bombay; etc. There is extensive coverage of the Arctic Expedition on the ship Pandora; also a full page of Henry Irving as Macbeth, and much more. An attractive and profusely illustrated volume with many unusual full-page and folded illustrations in very good clean condition. .
