About This Item

London: George C. Leighton, 1887. Hardcover. Fair. 790p. Ex-library. An oversize hardcover book with a black cloth spine, leather corners, and green cloth boards. Corners heavily worn and cloth smudged with rubbed-off bits of leather. Occasional light foxing and a few library stamps inside, but otherwise, text unmarked. Color foldout depicting ships of the British navy is splitting along a few of the folds, but still largely intact. Closed tear in foldout portrait of Bismarck. Dampstaining on pages 531-554 (the entire Nov. 5 issue). Pages 781-784 are detached, and the rear hinge is cracking. Rest of pages are still attached. A worn but readable copy, with no missing pages. Volume 91 of THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, with weekly issues spanning July 2 through December 31, 1887. Contains reporting on Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee; a multi-part article by journalist Walter B. Harris titled "The British Mission to Morocco," which is lavishly illustrated; an article by Amelia B. Edwards about archaeological excavations in Egypt; the death of Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind; and ongoing unrest in Ireland. Among the many fine engravings are numerous views of the Jubilee festivities; a 2-page spread depicting the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne; impressive views of British ships at the Jubilee naval review; a 2-page color plate depicting the village of Mapledurham; scenes of natives along the Congo River; and a large foldout portrait of Otto von Bismarck. Measures approx. 16" x 12
