Partridge & Co., (1859).. 2 parts in 1 volume, probably the first 1 volume edition (1859), small 4to, 255 x 170 mm, 10 x 6¾ inches, dark green cloth, gilt corner ornaments, gilt border, gilt title in gilt diamond, spine title on gilt panel, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers, pages: (8), 202. Pretty coloured frontispiece by Henry Anelay, coloured extra title page (mother and baby), 6 charming colour plates by John Gilbert, numerous engravings, some full page, many of children. Gilt worn on spine, head and tail of spine and corners slightly worn, a couple of tiny nicks on lower hinge, hinges lightly rubbed, some tiny pale spots on upper cover, small modern bookplate on front pastedown, a little light spotting to Contents page and first 3 leaves of text, tiny closed tear to lower edge of first 9 pages, small chip to lower edge of page 29, occasional small pale stains mainly to margins, mostly very clean, last page and rear endpaper lightly foxed, a few inner joints cracked, binding sound. A good plus copy. Part I was published in 1858 with 124 pages and Part II in 1859 with pages 125-202, both undated but Part I's Preface was dated 1858 and announced Part II for 1859.
