About This Item
Montreal & London: McGill-Queen's University Press Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. "Since the Romantic revolt, the interest of Western artists in the irrational and the psychological has often centred on a self-conscious exploration of subjective emotions. Increasingly, the witer has come to see the problem of art as how best to embody the tensions, concerns, and insights which he finds in his psychic self. It is Professor Gose's contention that some of the major English novelists of the nineteenth century found their solutions to this problem in adapting literary forms which predate Romanticism. Even before the end of the eighteenth century, the gothic novelists were beginning to discover intuitively that image patterns, expressive settings, and melodramatic plots offered more scope for self-expression than did the Augustan ideal of a representational and normative picture of human character and action." Examines some of the works of such writers as Charles Dickens, Emily Bronte, Thomas Hardy, and Joseph Conrad. Blue cloth, 182 pages (including index). Rubbed dust jacket w/light edgewear..
