About This Item
London : James Macmillan, [1948]. First edition. A tale of murder and counterfeit at an English country house, which works well enough as a comedy of manners between tough crime reporter Mike Manstone, Inspector Clarke of the Yard ("Hack" and "Sleuth" to each other), and Manstone's long-suffering girlfriend Jane. As a murder mystery it ranks nowhere. The cover artist was evidently not paid well enough to read the book (or perhaps paid more to ignore it) - the woman with the gun should be wearing a "concealing hood" and "a great shapeless garment" at the time. Post 8vo (20cm). 96pp. Original stapled stiff card wrappers; acid-free tape repair and strengthening to spine beneath the dust-jacket; staples rusted and discoloured; a few spots, but a good copy in the attached dust-jacket - busty brunette, smoking gun, etc. - the jacket a little rubbed, worn, and discoloured by staples on lower wrapper. Just two copies (Bodleian and British Library) located in major libraries worldwide.
