Bobbs-Merrill, 1939. First Edition . Cloth. Fine/Fair. (1st) Large, heavy sturdy book, quality red cloth, bright gilt design at top front, gilt lettering, design and borders near-bright on spine, 345 pages including extensive bibliography. On first front end apper in blue ink: "To Hazel and Durward with my continued love, Bertita. Pre-publication copy. Sept. 24, 1939." Includes tiny Christmas Greeting card with color design, signed "Jack," Harding's writer-husband. Includes typed letter signed comparing Emperor Karl to Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, dated September 8, 1939. Also a typed letter signed to Derby (Durward Staley of Indianapolis) from Hollywood. Tiny light red stain at bottom front edge near tip. DJ glossy and colorful with color portraits, an ornate design, blue and gold background, praise on back from New York Times, Chicago Tribune and others. DJ has many nicks and tears to most edges. Fair DJ/Fine book.
