Improved District Railway Map of London

Large folding map, 66 x 108 kms, printed in colour, folded as issued (a couple of splits along the folds), in illustrated paper wrappers (light edge wear). Scarce early railway map of London. 'This is a geographic style railway map on linen and card, issued by the District Railway. The map shows the geographic features of the central London area with the District Railway and Metropolitan Railway overprinted in red and other railway lines overprinted in blue. Railway company names are printed alongside the lines which they operate, if lines are operated by more than one company the line is printed using two colours, red and blue. On the District Railway the company name is printed in blue and station names are printed in red. Stations are marked as squares and where a station is served by the District or Metropolitan Railways and another railway company, the station is marked with two squares, a red square for the Metropolitan and District Railways and a blue one for the other company. Journey times on the Underground section operated by the District Railway are not shown on this map. Extensions on the District Railway are marked with a broken red line, for the extension between Mill Hill Park and South Acton Sations and on the section between Aldgate and Whitechapel. The new authorized extension completing the inner circle between Aldgate and Mansion House is marked as a red broken line. There are two omnibus routes represented as a line of dots on this map, between Barnes and Hammersmith and between Putney and Walham Green, the names of some of the stops are marked. Geographical features such as roads, parks and the River Thames are included in detail on the map and printed in various colours, places of interest are marked in red or pink. There is also an overprint in red which highlights Willesden Junction, as the station for the LNWR and North London Railways. This map has a black border, which is broken on the left hand side in order to include the Railway lines as far as Richmond and Ealing. The title is at the top of the map, and the reference key is at the bottom as well as details of where to obtain copies, there is also a compass pointer in the top left hand corner, the reverse is blank.
