NY, London: Charles B. Norton. FAIR book. 1st, 10"x6", 521,(errata)pp.. 1853. 1st. Hardcover. FAIR book, MISSING backstrip top & bottom. VG text block. Top edges of most leaves after p150 unopened. . Brown cloth boards, edge ruled & central floral design in blind. Front cover with gilt vignette of liberty cap holding scales of justice. Spine lettered in gilt. Spine MISSING upper & lower 1/5th of backstrip. Weak upper hinge. Prelim front margin faintly damp stained. Otherwise nice text block; tightly bound, no loose pages, aging, soiling, foxing, etc. Poole was an important figure in 19th C library science. In 1848, while still a student, he compiled his first index of 154 pages. In 1882 the 3rd, @ 1469pages. "WEBurton" neatly inked inside cover. Below that, in pencil: "A Oakley Hall, who purchased at sale of W Burton Oct 1860". Burton was an NYC actor and author. He also published "Gentleman's Magazine" from 1837-40, with Edgar Allan Poe as editor. Burton's signature is a match with Wikipedia samples. Also his death date of Feb 1860 is consistent with Hall's Oct 1860 purchase. Hall, 1826-1898, was a lawyer, politician & writer. He was NYC DA from 1853-59 & 1861-69, Then mayor from 1869 to 1872. Wilipedia has Hall as one of the worst mayors the country has ever had. .
