Spine is sunned, typical of this edition, and the edges of wraps a bit less so.; A concise, well-written history of the life and career of Thomas R. Reding (1807-1852), a stonecutter of gravestones in Indiana. Initially a cabinetmaker, then a saddle maker, he found his calling as a stonecutter, essentially a folk artist, cutting gravestones in several Indiana counties. Includes 39 monochrome photographs that illustrate the evolution of his style. In four sections: I, Thomas Reding: Beginnings; II, The Carvings; III, Epilogue; IV, Finding Thomas Reding. Line drawn map with a table of the locations of cemeteries with Reding's stonework. Includes a 12 pages directional guide to the cemeteries. Bibliography of primary and secondary sources for this book. Acknowledgements. In pale green wraps with illustrated front cover. Includes ephemera: c.1985-1990 Indianapolis Star (IN) newspaper clippings about gravestone, grave marker, and monument carving in Indiana. The authors are both Indiana historians, with Buckley being Director Emeritus of the Jerome Hall Law Library at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. While this book focuses on an individual stonecutter, it is an accurate portrayal of anyone in the trade in the early 19th Century. Clean and at least Very Good+, perhaps better.; B&W Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 106 pages .
