The author was Piotr Feliksovich Maevsky (1851-1892). Significant edgewear to cover, internally sound with minimal tanning of paper. Owner's signature and oil spot on ffep (M. Kirshbaum?), another on end paper (V. Rikovshky?) with oaktree bookplate of Heino Ross. Spine sl. frayed at top edge, some insect damage to glued areas. The text contains keys to genera and species, generic descriptions and Russian and Latin names of genera and species, summaries of distribution (by local government region) and habitat, flowering times, and selected line drawings mostly showing both the whole plant and flowers or fruits. Complete with two folding maps: "Map of the Routes & Distances to the Virginia Springs" (approx. 28 x 39 cm) and "White Sulphur Springs, Virginia. J. Calwell Proprietor. 1847" (approx. 19 x 24 cm). Contemporary (perhaps original) half calf over marbled boards with gilt-lettered black leather spine label, raised bands, and gilt rules on spine. Good plus. Front hinge professionally repaired with Japanese tissue. Light wear and a few small scuffs to leather. Leaves just a trifle toned, but generally clean. Small adhesive remnant to margin of one leaf, in no way affecting text. First folding map has a professional tissue repair along the length of one vertical fold with loss of several letters of text (the "ewi" in Lewisburg and the "h" in Salt Sulphur.) A nicely preserved copy with untrimmed edges, title blind-inscribed (by hand) on spine. xvi, 151, xiv, plate facing p. xv, 153-255 pp. The first Welsh local flora, particularly noted for its appendix of Welsh names of plants.

Text is tanned and clean, folding map has minor archival tape repair and is in very sound condition. Author's descriptions of the country, it's culture, its agriculture including a discussion of the farming of the Ruta Baga. He crtiicizes at length Morris Birkbeck's settlement in Illinois. John Lane The Bodley Head. London. 1902. Early Edmund New illustrated edition, originally issued in 1900. 8vo. (7.8 x 5.4). Fully illustrated with 50 full page, and 135 smaller engravings by Edmund H. New. Fine bright copy in a beautiful binding of half dark green morocco. Spine with five raised bands, compartments with double gilt ruled borders. Two sections lettered in gilt and the others decorated with gilt design of a bird on a branch. Marbled paper on boards. A lovely copy.

Aberdeen: Geo Clark and Son, 1845 An extremely scarce original copy of Edmondston's Shetland flora. Thomas Edmonston produced his first list of Shetland plants when he was 11 years old and had the good fortune to be able to discuss and share it with Joseph Hooker. He expanded the list and produced this work when he was 20 years old. It was and has remained an important work on Shetland's flora. It is in the original blind stamped decorative cloth binding with gilt titles to the front board. The binding is in very good condition. The original yellow endpapers are present and a previous owner has glued the top flap of an envelope to the fpd with their ink notes of plants and a reference to Tingwall manse. There is also a small ink '35' to the top corner of the fep. Contents: title, dedication, preface, introduction pp xxvii; arrangement of Shetland plants 1-67 with errata slip. Contents clean with extensive scholarly annotation - such as references to locations and Icelandic flora.

Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 293, 279pp. Blue embossed cloth, gilt ship vignette to front cover, all edges gilt, frontispiece with tissue-guard for each volume. Covers edgeworn, spine chipped at head and tail and darkened, contents age-toned most heavily at first and last few pages, light foxing to fronitspieces and c first and last few pages, binding is tight. Evocative descriptions of the landscapes, environment and the people in America in mid 19th century.

Marbled endpapers. Tight binding. Foxing only on pages with engravings - engravings not affected. All other pages are clean.

Heavier wear to title page, especially edges, with some ink marking here and verso. Second edition with extensive large type dedication and lengthy preface. Full leather boards and remnant of spine all detached, thus a candidate for sympathetic rebinding. 16mo. 254pp
