Later binding from a 14th or early 15th-century manuscript, endleaves renewed, early vellum front pastedown with early ink annotations (dated 1543). Soiling, minor tears and small holes to exterior manuscript leaf, light rubbing to extremities, light wear to spine ends and corners, which are bumped, hinges cracked, minor worming to rear free endpaper. Moderate toning to interior, occasional light soiling, faint dampstaining in a few places, partial crack in text block between leaves a7-a8, all leaves secure, leaves a8, b1, b2, g6 and h1 recently reinforced at gutter, small wormholes to margins of a few leaves, no loss to text, occasional early underlining, manicules and brief annotations, some affected slightly by trimming. $12,500. * Between 1250 and 1450, the Post-Glossators, a group of legal scholars and teachers in Italy, initiated the recovery of Roman law texts from the corruptions of the medieval Glossators. Their efforts to apply Roman law to the jurisprudence of their day also prepared the way for the natural law school of the seventeenth century and helped to lay the foundations of the modern state. The greatest member of this group was Bartolo of Sassoferrato. Better known as Bartolus, he was a practicing lawyer and professor at the University of Perugia. His unrivalled reputation derives from his enormous literary output. In addition to the commentaries on the Corpus Juris Civilis for which he is best known, he wrote a number of treatises on law and politics.
